The project is taking part in the competition

The International Competition of Budapest Metropolitan University and the Design School of NYU HSE proposed to reimagine cinema through alternative film posters.

In my project I created 5 posters for 5 Hungarian films: On Body and Soul (2017), Wild Roots (2021), Explanation for Everything (2023), Larry (2022) and White Palms.

The project was based on a desire to find in diverse films a single visual constant — an element that would connect them at a deep, non-verbal level. The connecting link was red.

Regardless of the plot and genre, each story features red — not always obvious but invariably iconic. It can be read as the color of blood, or a cluster of fear, or even a shade of hidden feelings. Red is by nature: it does not boil down to one character, but contains a whole range of meanings.

That is why the space for utterance is black and white. The monochromatic base dampens visual noise and allows red to become an accent — a single color stroke that highlights the most important, keeping the viewer’s attention to the point.

An additional expressive means and conscious advantage of the project is the handwritten font. It brings a living, tactile dimension to the poster by shaping the character of the graphic utterance and enhancing its tone.
