Soviet and Russian freestyle swimmer. Four-time Olympic champion, six-time world champion, 21-time European champion, and multiple world and European record holder. Along with Vladimir Salnikov, he holds the record for most Olympic gold medals among Soviet swimmers. He was one of the world's strongest swimmers in the 50- and 100-meter freestyle events in the 1990s and early 2000s.
