JOHANN GOTTLIEB GEORGI
A Description of The Peoples Native to The Russian State, Their Everyday Habits, Customs, Costumes, Dwellings, Practices, Entertainment, Religion and Other Information St. Petersburg, 1776–1799
For Russia the 18th century marked an epoch of remarkable geographical discoveries. At the end of his reign Peter the Great ordered the equipping of an expedition to investigate Russian territory. This took place from 1733 to 1743 and was named the Great Northern Expedition. By order of Catherine the Great, the Russian Academy of Sciences dispatched five more expeditions between 1768 and 1774 to study the natural environment and the way of life and populations from Central Russia to the Far East. One party was led by Johann Gottlieb Georgi, who subsequently wrote a book that combined all the ethnographic knowledge Russian scholars had amassed in the course of the 18th century. This work was based on his own observations, data from other scholars and also the Kunstkamera collection, which included material such as sketches, written records, objects and costumes gathered during previous trips. Georgi’s study represents not only a unique chronicle of scientific history, but also a document that recorded information about the peoples of Russia in what was largely their primordial state.

CHARLES RECHBERG
The Peoples of Russia, or A Description of The Customs, Habits And Costumes of The Diverse Nationalities of The Russian Empire Paris, 1812–1813
In the early 19th century Russia began to play an increasingly significant role in international political and social life. Western Europe was swept by a fashion for all things Russian, and publishing was no exception: numerous books about the Russian Empire appeared in no time. One of these was initiated by Charles Rechberg, a Bavarian envoy to the Russian court. Rechberg saw a series of drawings the artist Yemelian Korneyev had made during his Russian travels and was eager to publish them. The text was written by Rechberg with the participation of writer and historian Georges-Bernard Lepping. This album gives reliable information on the most varied aspects of the life of Russian peoples, from their costumes to religious ceremonies and folk festivals, and bears witness to the West’s genuine interest in Russia.

JEAN BAPTISTE BRETON
Russia, or The Customs, Habits And Costumes of The Inhabitants of All The Provinces of This Empire Paris, 1813
This work can be described as a collection of suppositions about Russia. Attempting to describe our country from other first-hand accounts, the author must caution against being too trustful of the various travellers used as sources, as they give rise to many amusing errors, myths and strange ‘facts’ that bear no relation to reality. However, this publication is in the style of belleslettres and is illustrated with engravings and sketches by two outstanding artists: the Frenchman Michel-François Damame-Demartrais and the Englishman Robert Ker Porter, both of whom made drawings during their travels across Russia.
Volume 4
GUSTAV THEODOR PAULI
An Ethnographic Description of The Peoples Of Russia St. Petersburg, 1862
This splendid book, published to mark Russia’s millennium and dedicated to the Emperor Alexander II, became a bibliographical rarity almost the moment it appeared. This publication essentially ended the epoch when there were still quite a few uncharted areas on the map of Russia, although centuries-old lifestyles and national traditions had not yet been forgotten in the march to civilisation.
